Meta-Museum – Antwerp Cup
An exquisite Chinese Export Silver lidded cup by the renowned Wang Hing & Co
Dated circa 1885, the cup stands 42cm high; the diameter of the stand is 40cm; the diameter of the lid 18.1cm. The cup weighs 2179gm [70.06 Troy ounces]. The armorial cartouche remains blank
The maker’s mark is pictured below right – a typical stamp for Wang Hing of the period. The artisan’s mark [below left] reads “Xi’an”
The cup is part of the main collection at the Zilvermuseum housed in the Sterckshof castle in Deurne, Antwerp – a 20th century replica of the 16th century building.
The cup was gifted to the museum by Denise Brouwers as a legacy and is the only example of Chinese Export Silver currently in the museum collection.
A similar piece was sold at auction at Bonham’s, London in 2011 for £21,250, however, it was not by Wang Hing and was by a lesser maker
